It's no easy feat, going against what you're familiar with. I did that when I embraced the gothic life, a fate set in motion by my discovery of Type O Negative (and its spiritual origin goth rock), and a spiritual awakening that changed my perspective on life and death.
My art was once like safe psychedelia; colorful, happy and carefree. Color intensity got pushed to the max, layers of digital paint lavish and drawing attention from every corner. Original storytelling was ignored for fan illustrations that could bring temporary joy.
I ignored any pauses to breathe, reflect and acknowledge myself. One color was always missing too: black. Darker hues, those were equally undesirable. But I neglected myself that way. So my style grows, like a flower sprouting in an abandoned desert of uncultivated thoughts, into the darker, more alternative art I'm creating now.
Not everyone will understand it. Others will prefer escapism without heaviness or horror. I anticipate some of my older audience members will turn away.
It's okay.
I'm Starly Belle, and this is the culmination of my creative meditations.
